I've given up on the Apple driver for the time being because of this. I'm sure they'll get around to this eventually. Another user confirmed for me that controlling the Apple TV is MUCH snappier via IR and I will be experimenting with this today.

Good news for people who are tired of slow response time. There will soon be an update to the AppleTV driver that will incorporate a .NET to Python bridge so we can keep the connections alive. Still testing here but coming soon.

Hey Dave I saw today that there is an update to the AppleTV driver. Is this the update that addresses the response time?

I'm testing it here in the office. It will be pushed out soon.

Hmmm, I see the update as well. Does that mean it was accidentally pushed out before you meant it to?
