Hey Tom I went through this last night. The "problem" is that if you set a static ip addy per the directions the remote connects to wifi much faster so it launches the smartremote.apk almost immediately.
I handled this by temporarily blocking the remote from wifi in my router. This bought me enough time when I booted the remote before it auto launched the smartremote apk. I would imagine you could do the same thing by just temporarily turning off the wifi in your router entirely.

Thanks Nillaz, that's an interesting way to do a reset! Looks like I had some remote work just now doing a little updating to my setup. I'll check it out and report back results.

Ok, what is happening is your had the myServer IP address setup correctly.
You had the project name correct.
And you had a smartremote folder setup too.
But...that folder was empty. So, when SmartRemote connected to the webserver, the page was blank which is what you were seeing.
We remoted into your system and moved the SmartRemote template into the blank folder and Walla - you have a user interface on the SmartRemote!!!
Now, in the process of figuring root cause...IF ( you had one) you had the wrong folder name (no folder exists with that name), then the resolution is to disconnect myServer from the network (pull the ethernet cable out) and reboot the SmartRemote. The software "smartremote.apk" will try to connect to the non existent myServer and go back to the Settings page where you could fix your myServer IP address and / or the folder name.
But you should be back in action.
We also added versioning to the Templates so you can see if your more recently downloaded template is using the latest base. Certainly you would need to figure out what changed in the latest base template compared to any custom template you based yours off (if you mod it).

I redid the setup on my remote and I'm 100% sure I'm now using the correct ip address but I'm still seeing this behavior and can't get the remote to talk to the server. I also can't seem to install the smartremote template through the Software Update menu in the dashboard interface. It says it's downloading it and rebooting the server but when I go back in there it still indicates that it isn't installed. Any thoughts?Ok, what is happening is your had the myServer IP address setup correctly.

I saw the activity and I'm confused about the "blank folder" you are referring to?
As to the source of the issue, could it be that not setting up the myDesigner before setting up the Remote be the issue. Currently, I try to use myDesigner and It seems it can't connect to myServer. I need to watch the videos again for now.
Btw, I can see the UI but can only see page 2 of 2 and cannot go back to page 1.
Thanks for your help,
Tom
