For some reason Windows dropped the \myserver part.    When I click on the share in file manager I can navigate to the files including overlays and I seem to have read/write access..
What did you mean when you said Windows dropped the \myserver part?  When you browse from the file manager to the myserver folder, what is the file path showing in the top of the file manager?

I am confusing myself as to if the correct setting should be R: or R:\myserver

Microsoft uses \ for file directories, Unix and web uses /.  Try making using the backslash on that windows name.

When you mapped the drive, did it ask for a user id/password? If not, then you may only have read access.

Just checked. My designer share is set to:  \\192.168.0.65\myServer

Names are case sensitive in Unix.

Whe I typed in \\192.168.10.252\myserver to map the network drive windows dropped the \myserver part as seen in File Explorer.   I included a pic of it in my previous post.
Thx

I can type it into MyDesigner settings various ways -  myserver, myServer, etc and my project files are always available and are editable.  Crash when trying to add an overlay still occurs.  Thx

It didn't drop anything.  It is just the way it is displayed.

For example, I have a mapped drive that shows up as:  Shadowfax \\Lorien\Backup) Z:

The drive letter Z:\ is mapped to \\Lorien\Backup\Shadowfax

In your case, based on your pictures, try entering R:\ in the settings and see if that works.
