Thank you all for the suggestions! I decided to order an IR USB from Video Storm. Let's see how that goes
I'd buy one for use with the FireTV stick but Video Storm want $160 for shipping to the UK! Insane.

that really is crazy!! have you tried reaching out or did you get that quote from the website? maybe they can give you another rate if you reach out? Another option is trying some sort of freight forwarder or the Grabr app (I used them in Brazil, never to the UK but could be an option...)

I do find that they send out the IrUSB at least in the US in a fairly large box, it could be a tiny envelope.... :/

It's a shipping quote direct from their website. And sadly nobody seems to sell them in the UK or EU. A freight forwarder is an idea - I might try that if my homebrew wifi keyboard doesn't pan out.

By the way, it looks like everyone has the same problem with ADB control of Android streamers. Here's a video comparing the Crestron ADB based driver for a FireTV versus IRUSB.

Hi This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , where are you stuck? Did you install the IrUSB app (in Play store or Aptoide), then plug in the irusb dongle to the android box.

Then in myServer, add the IrUSB (I think its called VideoStorm IrUSB) in myServer through the Software Updates menu option through the dashboard.

You can manually add the device in the driver screen or have it auto-detect it.

After that, it takes over from the android driver. It has basically the same functionality as the android driver (same or similar commands).

Let me know where you are stuck i can give more detail depending on the issue

Hmm, I actually did all of that. I have the app, have the irUSB connected, when I click “send IR” in the app i see the USB light up, so it seems to be connected correctly. I have the driver in myserver with the IP of the shield (have tried both manual adding and discovery- it discovers the device). But then when I try to issue a command, nothing happens. I use my server to send a command like to navigate up, or use the home button, and nothing happens. In the logs I see an error in my server saying something like “no controller found”

one question I have is around USB debugging. Do you have this on or off? Video storm says to turn it off. Is yours disabled?
