The problem with IR on the Shield is that the Shield doesn't have an IR receiver built-in.  Even before I started using the Smart Remote, I tried using a FLIRC, in combination with a URC remote.  I had too many problems with either commands being ignored, or being executed multiple times.  My search for a remote that could control the Shield via IP is what led me to the Smart Remote.

It seems like the only reliable way to control the Shield is with the Bluetooth remote that comes with it.

Now that I have a dedicated box to run Kodi, the Shield is just for streaming only.

It would be nice if Allonis could improve/rewrite the Shield driver, But rather than purchasing an irUSB, I'd rather put the money towards an Apple TV.

I hear ya. I don't love my Shields overall but their audio capabilities make them fantastic Emby clients. That's hard for me to get away from short of going for bespoke local media players (Dune, Zidoo, etc) throughout the house, and my wife is not going to go for juggling different streamers in each room lol

Well for what it is worth I was able to replicate the runaway IR condition with the GenericIR driver. The version of the driver I released this afternoon resolves the issue It will now stop sending IR as soon as the button is released.

As for a longer term solution for all android tv devices I'd love to write an apk that would run in the background and listen for commands on some port. Totally bypassing ADB altogether. If it was easy someone probably would have done it already. If anyone out there has apk experience and thinks this can be done email me.

We also have a Generic Bluetooth driver that might be made to impersonate a shield remote. Just not enough hours in a day to do all this experimenting....

Just installed and it fixes everything for me! I guess I'm not leaving myServer after all! You have no idea how much I've been agonizing over this problem.

Thank you for doing this, especially on a Sunday!!!

You could automate things where your wife just selects what she wants to achieve (watch TV, watch a movie, etc) and then automate which player is used with what input ports etc. End users shouldn't need to know what hardware is in the mix. Just their direction of end goal.

Glad to hear the IR change fixed the problem.  I too thought you were talking about ADB and not IR.  Need to read slower ;)

That's an excellent point. I'll sit down tonight and let your suggestion marinade for a bit.

I'm sure your reading speed is fine. The problem is that I have diarrhea of the keyboard. I'll try to be more concise in the future.

The problem I had with the Dune and the Zidoo is they each have their own media management.  I've been using Kodi since it was called XMBC, so I chose the Ugoos AM6b+ running CoreELEC.

I use Kodi directly, but there are a few different Emby clients for Kodi.

You can then use the Kodi device to control the Ugoos.

I originally chose the Shield so that I could both stream and playback local media on one box.  But I am glad I made the switch.

I also don't care for their media management solutions. For one, I don't love any of their UI's. For another, I greatly prefer to manage/customize my library metadata and artwork on the server itself rather than individual client devices.

The Ugoos looks promising, especially if I end up automating things the way David suggested. Thanks for the tip I'll do some research!
