I hadn't really contemplated this strategy, but the more I think about it the more I'm liking the idea of running this in a VM on my NAS. I've been contemplating buying/building another server as a backup but I think I might go down this path instead. Thanks!
Don't thank me yet.  Running in a VM is possible, and Allonis does offer some documentation to get you started.  However, it is unsupported.

I like having only one box.  It means a single network connection, and only one device that needs backup power.

If you decide to give it a try, I'm happy to answer any questions that might come up.

It's all good. I already have the QNAP so it costs me nothing to experiment with it in my spare time though I appreciate you offering to let me bounce things off of you if I run into issues. I may take you up on that if push comes to shove!

I'm not going to go down this rabbit hole today though. One of my remotes is starting to fail already so I have more pressing things to deal with ATM but I'll get to this eventually lol.

Solution? Maybe

I'm 90% sure my issue was a heat issue causing issues. I installed the image on an SD card and put it in another PI4 with a pretty strong cooling fan. It ran without any issues...and the temp stayed around 35C. I installed the Deskpi Pro fan software on my backup system and the fan kicked on and the system cooled and stayed up.

Here is the link to the software:
github.com/DeskPi-Team/deskpi

My first test box was an Argon One w/SSD and even with their fan running it ran super hot.

Will update in a day or so, if it is up tomorrow morning then it was the heat.

Update - Still running...the only change was activating the fan and reducing the heat, so I'm pretty sure the crashes were heat related.

Update - 8/16 - Still running, it was the heat.  My Deskpi Pro (the primary) is running at 38c after adding the fan code.  Previously the case was hot to the touch, now it is as cool as a cucumber.

You will find that a Pi starts throttling down at 70 C Anything more than that and it throws a hissy fit.
You can implement a myServer Automation Rule that alerts you if the controller is getting hot (like over 60C).
