FFS... Hadn't had any issues for quite a while, then came down to this.

All good amigo.
The hard reset fixes it right up, just glad it was me that saw it and not one of my daughter's.. they would've panicked hard.

The exact same thing happened to me, two days in a row now.
When I am done for the evening I power off the system and put the remote on the charger. The base blinks, but the charging icon is not lit. I remove it from the charger and the remote is unresponsive. I put it back on the charger and I get the Fastboot screen.
A hard reset restores functionality. I put it back on the charger and it behaves normally.
Not sure if it's related, but these are the last things I do: I long-press the home button to get back to the room screen, and then I long-press the power button to run the system off macro. Long-pressing the home button is extremely inconsistent. I can hold the button for a long time and the long-press indicator will never light up. Sometimes it takes two or three tries before it works properly. After that, the long-press of the power button always works on the first try.
How often is this happening to you? Is there any other solution, other than a hard reset?

I have it happening about once a month on both remotes. I did have a remote where it was happening a lot and one day the hard reset didn't fix it (It took a trip home to the mothership for a fix). I don't see any pattern or sequence that causes it to happen...

I also never figured out what the root of the issue with this was, but out of the blue it stopped happening on my remotes. I haven't seen the fast boot screen in months.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
