Pi Power supply and cables

i finally got round to opening my Deskpi (I know, I know, it's been a while, particularly since I was backer 33, but I've been busy and undecided, lol).

Anyway, I'm in the UK, and was expecting a UK plug or adaptor, but, as the picture shows, did not get one. Just to be sure, what power adaptor do I need to power the Deskpi? Or can I just plug into USB (there should be a USB 3.1 connector according to the box, but that's not there either). I had a look online but the versions of the DeskPi Pro V2 I could find had a USB port at the rear, next to the HDMI inputs, presumably for power, where the adaptor socket is on the supplied version.

Hey man welcome back! Does the Deskpi support power over USB? I'm not able to check right now but I'm fairly certain my box doesn't even have a USB-C port.

The power supply in the box is a fairly standard affair using a barrel type connector. I don't know the diameter off the top of my head, but IIRC I believe it outputs 12v@2A.

It's funny that you decided to crack this open today. I finally have the R3 on the way for comparisons. It sounds like we're both going to be on a journey of self discovery over the next few days.

Cheers @Nillaz. I've not even taken my R3 out the box yet (a familiar pattern, lol), as my R2 is working perfectly, and there are a few issues being sorted with the R3 currently, as you'll have read about yourself. 

It's weird, everything I can find about the DeskPi Pro V2 says it can be powered via USB, but as I noted, all the pictures I can find of it show a USB slot, whereas our models have the barrel jack. So either there's a different version of the DeskPi Pro V2, I'm looking at the wrong thing entirely, or the hardware in the box is a different model altogether.

I'm actually looking forward to trying this now, I reckon after over a year the whole thing should be matured, the onboarding and setup should be more user friendly (hopefully) and with people having already trodden the path before me, most issues should have been ironed out. 

I think, if we both get both remotes set up and running, it'll be interesting to see what we think of them, having each run the different system for a year. I might be hitting you up on Discord for sure advice when I'm setting up this one.

I have to say, I think you'll find the R3 software really quite user friendly, if you've not already used the simulator version, and there's also a community tool which offers even more usability than the official configurator. You probably know that already though, with dipping into the Discord! 

I'm quite surprised this forum isn't more active, but I'm hoping that just means everyone is having no issues to report - unless there's a Discord somewhere that everyone is on 🤔😁

As usual I follow the Discord and I'm aware of the issues with excessive battery drain, wifi connectivity, etc. I haven't messed with the simulator yet but I expect I'll be doing so tonight or tomorrow to get a head start on the learning curve. I've watched a few of Travis's videos on how it all goes together so I think I have a handle on the basic programming flow. I'm very curious to see how it stacks up to my SmartRemotes (and Harmony Elites for that matter). I doubt that I'll be posting my findings on the UC Discord server because I know that the moment I mention the SmartRemote or say anything that isn't completely glowing about the R3 the knives are going to come out for me lol. There's plenty of good info there but sometimes it's all a little too tribal for my liking.

It has been fairly quiet on these forums recently. There haven't been any significant updates to core functionality for awhile now and I don't want to speak for other owners, but in my case the system is completely stable. I don't believe Allonis maintains a Discord server, but I still check here for new info every day though.

By all means feel free to hit me up with questions. I don't promise that I'll always have all the answers, but I'm always willing to help to the best of my ability.

Yeah, I can't be bothered with tribal nonsense, regardless of what it's to do with. With tech, I'd buy all the new shinies if I could get away with it, and I have zero loyalty to a brand. Make good stuff, I'll use it and tell other people about it, but know that I am gonna like stuff from other companies too, and I show no favour! Although, I can be lazy and have a bunch of tech still in boxes for a while after buying it - but I bet a good lot of the sort of people willing to splash out well into three figures for a remote control could say the same thing!

Lol, this board format still reminds me of mid to late 90s internet message boards. Seems like an anachronism in the days of Discord and other live chat channels (although Discord is really just IRC evolved if you ask me). But, that said, it has it's advantages - messages don't get buried in the conversational flow on a board, for one. And it's better than old newsgroups BBs (showing my age now!)

I generally prefer a forum layout over Discord, but I'm not going to lie I despise this Kunena forum software. It's functional but it isn't user friendly at all. I tolerate it because it's what we have to work with, but I do not do so gladly.
