Right now, I use the default Shield driver (ADB) just to power on and off. I keep the Shield remove handy for navigation of Kodi on the Shield.
The long-term solution is probably the VideoStorm IRUSB. But for the cost of that, I am a good ways towards purchasing an Apple TV as a replacement for the Shield.
I bought an Apple TV for the theater room and I am trying to install PyATV. Waiting to see how that goes before making a final decision on the Shield in the family room.
I haven't learned how to use MyDesigner yet, other than to make some minor tweaks to the defaults. So, there is a learning curve involved in setting up the IRUSB, or the Apple TV using IR.
I'd prefer to use the default scenes for all devices. Which is a long way of saying I'd like to get the Shield running again. If I don't hear from Allonis in a few days, I'll start toggling ADB off and on and see what happens.
