Networking Basics

Many IP devices have a default IP that they ship with.  In this case, DHCP addressing might not be available on the device.

The device very likely needs to be reconfigured so that the IP address is correct for the network it will be connected to.

 

Remote Assistance

If you want assistance from Allonis in setting up the network, connect the Laptop to an Internet accessible Wifi access point.

Install Teamviewer Host software on the laptop.  Change the IP address to permanent within the TeamViewer Host Advanced Security settings.

Provide the Teamviewer ID and permanent password to Allonis via an email.

Allonis can then connect to the Windows Laptop via TeamViewer and help manage the network connections.

 

Connections

For the simple network, plug your Windows laptop's ethernet connection into the device's ethernet connector with a known good Cat5/6 cable.

 

On the Windows Laptop

1. Access Network Settings:
  • Click the "Start" button.
  • Go to "Settings" > "Network & Internet".
  • Click on "Ethernet".
 
2. Edit IP Settings:
Under "IP assignment," click "Edit", Select "Manual", and Toggle on "IPv4".
 
3. Enter New IP Address Details:
  • In the IP address field, enter the new IP address you want to use.  Use an IP address that is in same subnet as the device's default - like:  device ships at 192.168.1.200...so set the laptop to be 192.168.1.199 (we assume this IP is not already in use on the network).  If the device is 192.168.2.1 default, then set the laptop at 192.168.2.10.
  • In the subnet mask field, enter the subnet mask.  The subnet is typically 255.255.255.0 for most simple networks.
  • In the gateway field, enter the gateway address.  If you are simply connecting to the device directly, no gateway address is needed.
  • Click "Save".
 You should now have connection to the device. 
Open a browser and type the device's default IP address.
A webpage should open.  Common default username / password is admin / admin.
Reconfigure the device to the permanent IP address needed for the network it should be accesible on.
On Allonis network switches, look for "Routing" or VLAN configuration to find / edit the default IP.  Click SAVE and the device should then be on it's NEW IP.  Note - the laptop might loose access to the device until the laptop is also reconfigured for the NEW network settings you just set.
 
 
Important Notes:
  • Static vs. Dynamic IP:
    If you're changing to a static IP address, you need to manually configure these settings. If you want your laptop to automatically get an IP address from your router, leave the settings on "Automatic (DHCP)".  Note that in the simple network case, there is no DHCP server on the network, so use a static IP address.
  • Subnet Mask and Gateway:
    Make sure you have the correct subnet mask and gateway address for your network.
  • Consult your Router:
    If you're unsure of the subnet mask or gateway, consult your router's documentation or the settings on your router's web interface.
  • IP Address Conflicts:
    Ensure the new IP address you choose is not already in use on your network to avoid conflicts.
 VLANs
Ensure your laptop's ethernet NIC is not configured for any VLAN.  VLANs will restrict that the laptop can communicate to a non VLAN configured device.
