Setting up an iPad / iPhone as the myServer 6 user interface device

As myServer is a web based system, no software is required on the UI device.  This makes it super easy to setup one or more devices and easy to upgrade to the next new iPad or iPhone.  Websocket support is required.  So iOS 13 and newer is required (or Mac 10.15 or newer).  The very latest 8th gen plus iPads have much faster processors and is highly recommended.  iPad Minis work, but don't have the latest processor so it will not be as fast response.

Just open Safari (browser) and type in the system website URL.  Typically it would be:

http://192.168.1.10/NameOfBar

Certainly the IP address would be specific to the facilities myServer address.

Once that is onscreen, save this to the Home page.

In Safari, go to:

settings / safari / request desktop website / all website = off

Shut down Safari and launch the new "app" icon from the device's home page.  The UI should open full screen and scale correctly.

myServer can also generate a QR code that can be put onscreen.  Simply using a second iPad's camera can then open it's Safari to the myServer's address.  Ask Allonis for details.

To add the icon when the iPad is not connected to myServer (the network):

  1. Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode to ON
  2. Go to Safari and type in the address you want to have an icon for
  3. Click Go. The page will fail to load, but the address will stay the same.
  4. Click the AirDrop icon next to the URL entry bar (landscape mode) and click the + button.
  5. Change the name of the site to whatever you want the icon caption to be
  6. Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode to OFF

That's it!  No software to install or maintain!

Occasionally the iPad may not be able to correctly display the myServer website.

You should isolate if the iPad or the Network (Wifi) or myServer or a controlled component is the issue.

To isolate the iPad, use a laptop and put it on the Wifi network, and access the myServer website.  Typically that would be:  http://ipaddress/nameofbar.  If that works, then it's the iPad.

Clearing Cache (old stored files) on the iPad can help:

How to clear the cache on an iPhone or iPad

Deleting the cache in Safari is simple.

  1. Open Settings, Select General.  Select iPad Storage. Scroll down to the fifth group of options and tap Safari.
  2. Scroll down and tap 'Website Data'.
  3. In the popup, tap 'Clear History and Data' to confirm.

Note that this will log you out of any websites you've currently signed into.
