AES67 is an open standard for audio over IP and audio over Ethernet. The standard was developed by the Audio Engineering Society and published in September 2013. The layer 3 protocol suite based on existing standards is designed to allow interoperability between various IP-based audio networking systems such as RAVENNA. It also provides interoperability with layer 2 technologies, like Audio Video Bridging (AVB).

A good overview video.

The Digisynthetic “Digisyn Link™ is an AoIP basic solution developed based on the major standards of AES67-2018 (Streaming Audio Interoperability Specification), including various embedded modules designed for different application scenarios and scales, DSP and MCU, as well as driver layer link libraries, middleware, etc.

AES67 uses standard network infrastructure (switches, cables, etc.) to connect devices, simplifying the workflow of audio transmission and reducing deployment costs.

In addition, AES67 also has the following outstanding advantages:

1. Open standard for interconnection and interworking: AES67 is the official standard for AoIP interconnection and interworking, which effectively eliminates data transmission barriers between different audio protocols, and users do not need to choose specific products to implement audio transmission solutions. Currently, many audio industry manufacturers have increased their support for AES67 and released products such as mixers, speakers, and audio codecs, such as Telos, QSC, Ravenna, and Magewell.

2. Flexible audio transmission settings: AES67 provides three audio sampling rates of 96/48/44.1KHz, two audio sampling depths of 16/24-bit, and 1 to 8 audio channels. It allows users to flexibly set the quality and number of audio channels for transmission, enabling perfect integration and compatibility with other devices throughout the entire audio transmission workflow.

3. Accurate synchronization mechanism: Compared with other IP-based audio standards, AES67 uses the PTPv2 (IEEE 1588-2008) standard for clock synchronization, which can achieve less than 2ms of audio data transmission, fully meeting the needs of the broadcasting and professional audiovisual industries, and can be widely used in event commentary, audio conferences, and other scenarios.
