Looking for Beta Testers

Wed Jan 01, 2014 8:55 pm

We're looking for one or two people to assist me with an experiment. We are planning on introducing a DLNA Media Server as part of our media solution. This media server will be fully integrated with DVDLobby, MusicLobby, all the Radio apps and would allow you to select any media from any MainLobby or Web Client and have that media streamed to any device on your network capable of consuming the stream.

The first phase of this experiment is to integrate DVDLobby for movie streaming. We have already tested streaming to Western Digital Live devices, Android Tablets, iPads, Oppo 103 player, Dish Hoppers and Panasonic TVs. All with very good success. We'd now like to test on additional devices.

Requirements for testing
1) You must rip your media to hard drives. Ideally in .mkv or mp4 formats although ripped to native files is okay too.
2) Your MLServer PC must have enough CPU to support real-time transcoding of the media. A Core i5 processor or better is ideal. But any modern PC should be fine.
3) Gigabit network is recommended. Wireless probably won't have the bandwidth to support high quality streams.
4) One or more "smart devices" capable of consuming the stream. This can be a networked TV, Blu-Ray player or most modern AVR devices.
5) Have LogMeIn or Team Viewer installed on your MLServer PC.

What I will do.
1) Install and configure the DLNA Media server on your MLServer PC.
2) Integrate it with MLServer.
3) Verify your "smart" devices are capable of consuming the stream.

What you'll need to do.
1) Give us feedback on how it works and help us debug any issues that might crop up.

Any takers?

Dave,

I would love to participate - I am very interested in this topic. I have all pre-requisites you mention - let me know when and what. Just an FYI - I am away until Wednesday, so any day after that and beyond works great.

Thanks

I am happy to help as well if you still need people. I have everything you need on the streaming side and my Samsung Smart TV is a pretty capable DLNA player.

Dave, I presume you already have enough testers, so I'll just suggest testing on the Xbox One since it's supposed to work as a DLNA client...I'm really trying to clean up my equipment rack :)

Thanks!

Dave,

I'm in if you need more testers. Samsung & Sharp smart tv's, also have 2 AppleTv's connected and available.

I hope this new feature won't kill the progression of the Sonos Driver.

The Samsung and Sharp TVs will work fine. The Apple TVs will not. Apple always decides to do things their own way and ignore the industry standards so the Apple devices are not DLNA compatible.

This has nothing to do with slowing or stopping Sonos development. Sonos has no published API specs. Everything we do with Sonos is a result of carefully reverse engineering the protocol by capturing the network traffic between the devices and then analyzing the traffic. Since I do not own a Sonos I have to do the reverse engineering remotely and that takes a very very long time to do.

Sounds good, The Sharp tv is hardwired to my network, I'll get the Samsung hardwired tonight when I get home.

What else can I do to help wit the Sonos ??

Have you been able to write a driver for IP control of the Sharp or Samsung ??

The Chromecast is useless as a DLNA streaming device. Like Apple Google decided to build their own streaming protocol and only tell a few select people how to use it. The Samsungs and Oppo are in play.
